SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: NASA Langley's 2025 Youth Day
DESCRIPTION:NASA Langley has extended an invitation to members of the Langley Alumni Association to volunteer during the 2025 Langley Youth Day!  If you are interested\, please email Chelsea Chandler with a cc: to Kathy Ferrare. \nYouth Day Goal: The goal of this event is to share knowledge of NASA careers and inspire the next generation of wonderers. \nYouth Day NASA Langley Contact:  Chelsea Chandler at Larcengagement@mail.nasa.gov\n\nVolunteer Planning Meeting: Wednesday\, July 9th at 11:30 am (Chelsea will provide  you the planning meeting information when you contact her.) \nLangley Youth Day Event: \nDate:  August 14th\nTime:  1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m  {Note:  Entire Youth Day event is 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.}\nPlace: NASA Gym \nVolunteer Activity:  NASA Langley is asking for interested current and former Langley employees to volunteer during an exhibit in the STEM Zone. This would involve having a hands-on activity or demonstration to share your work at Langley Research Center with employees and their children. \nIf an LAA member would like to volunteer at this event\, they can bring a hands-on activity or Langley’s OSTEM office\, can help them find an activity to highlight the work they did for NASA. For example\, Dave Schuster\, has used our Peeps Under Pressure kit to highlight his NASA knowledge in the past\, but he also has several items of his own that he brings along. Once the OSTEM office knows who is coming and who needs a related activity\, Chelsea can start the process of finding ones that match. \nThank you very much for considering to volunteer for this activity that can inspire our next generation of wonderers!

SUMMARY:First to Mars – Viking Precedents and Culture
DESCRIPTION:The AIAA Hampton Roads Section is presenting — First to Mars – Viking Precedents and Culture with Ms. Rachel Tillman.\nMs. Tillman is the Founder/Director of The Viking Mars Missions Education & Preservation Project (VMMWPP).\n\nDate: Friday\, July 11\, 2025\nTime of Talk:  Fom 4 – 5:30 PM\nQ&A:  5:30 – 6 PM\nLocation: NASA Langley Research Center\, Pearl Young Theater (room 108)\, IESB (Building 2012)\n\n\nThe AIAA has requested everyone fill out the registration form whether you plan on attending in-person or on-line.  Those that are not able to make it to the Pearl Young can register to receive instructions on connecting into the meeting.  \n\nNeed a one day badge for this event?  Contact Patricia Revolinsky at aiaa.hrs.chair@gmail.com and Rachel Tillman at Rachel@thevikingpreservationproject.org to get a visitor’s pass to come on center. Please follow the instructions on the attached flier by Friday\, June 27th. \n\n\n\nAbstract:\nThe Viking Missions were the foundation of Mars surface exploration\, setting precedents not only with the first successful landing on Mars\, but also with the organizational structure defined with precision and intention by LaRC\, and myriad engineering innovations including the elements of what continues to be the optimal Mars EDL (entry descent and landing)\, and the most ambitious science investigations to date. What is not well known is the journey to get there\, which has been meticulously reconstructed by Rachel Tillman\, of The Viking Mars Missions Education and Preservation Project a 501c3\nnonprofit dedicated to preserving and reconstructing the mission archives\, artifacts\, and history through hundreds of Oral history interviews with LaRC\, Ames\, JPL\, KSC\, Martin Marietta\, and more\, Vikings.  This talk shares not just some of these unique stories\, but the immense influence Viking has on exploration\, and how we continue to teach lessons of science\, engineering\, and leadership through a Viking lens. \nBiography – Ms. Rachel Tillman:\nRachel Tillman grew up with Viking\, her Father serving on the Science Team and later as the only NGO to take over a mission from NASA. Viking shaped her educational choices and she continues to support others mentoring and educating students (and adults) around the world. A passion that began when she helped her father create the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum exhibit “The Viking View of Mars” in 1982. She has been doing the work of preserving the mission ever since. Not only does she lead this work\, but she has developed a framework for and is an expert on the emerging Space Archeology field\, integrating technology into exhibits and educational experience.
